CULTURAL HOSTILITY TOWARD MASCULINITY
“Men are much more trouble than they're worth.”
— Germaine Greer, The Guardian
Rise of Feminism: Replaces men with women
Embrace of Transgenderism: Reverses men and women
Embrace of Socialism: Replaces men with government
Extension of Adolescence: Removes men’s responsibility
Reproductive Technology: Removes men from pregnancy
DON’T HEAR WHAT I’M NOT SAYING
Anti-Masculinity isn’t recent. It’s ancient. And isn’t merely atheistic, it’s demonic.
THE ANTI-MASCULINE SENTIMENT IS ANCIENT AND DEMONIC.
Exodus 1:16
“When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”
The Empire knew you could undermine an entire society if you abort boys.
It’s a mistake to believe this mandate for mass abortion is merely biological.
It’s spiritual.
It’s the same demonic plot of Herod later to thwart the rise of King Jesus.
WE NEED MEN OF CONSEQUENCE
“It’s a great honor to raise boys because you’re raising future society builders.”
— Lindsey Tjaden
Is it okay to be a man?
“It’s not okay, it’s necessary.”
— Jordan Peterson
Men have an important role to play; a necessary role.
“That’s not toxic masculinity—it’s what keeps the world going round.”
Good men can be an answer to the prayer.
“If you want to fix society, fix the family.”
— Pastor Austin Wadlow
God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society.
“If you wanna fix society, fix the family.”
“The world is looking for better methods. God is looking for better men!”
— E.M. Bounds
If you want to fix the family, we need redeemed men to step into their God-given calling to HEADSHIP.
What the world needs today is a church that produces MEN OF CONSEQUENCE!
It’s not enough to be TOUGH.
A lot of guys in Arizona barbecue in 115 degrees. Many of you have a tattoo of an animal skull or something dead. Most of you fully embrace the Second Amendment.
I’m all for that stuff but it isn’t good enough.
This is about being a spiritual leader.
You never want to be the biggest guy in the gym but a weak spiritual leader in the home.
HEADSHIP
1 Corinthians 11:3
“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.”
“Headship is the divine calling of a husband to take primary responsibility for Christlike servant-leadership, protection, and provision in the home.”
— John Piper
01. HEADSHIP REJECTS PASSIVITY AND TAKES RESPONSIBILITY
Genesis 3:6
“She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
Genesis 3:9
“But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’”
God is not a feminist. He believes in headship because He created headship.
Headship
Spiritually
Abides in Christ
Leads devotion
Disciples
Lack of integrity undermines your moral authority
Familially
Has a vision for the marriage, kids, family
Financially
Carries the burden of provision
Ecclesiologically
Prioritizes Church, Mission, Tithing, Community
Recreationally
Models Sabbath
Plans fun
Is intentionally present
Genesis 2:15
“The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
ʿābad (עָבַד) — to work, serve, cultivate
šāmar (שָׁמַר) — to keep, guard, watch over
BUILDING
Putting your back into building something good and pleasing to God:
Marriages
Children
Businesses
Churches
Society
Dads are society builders from their home. Your kids will shape the future world.
BATTLE
Keeping watch over our families, churches, cities, and society.
No matter what you build, someone or something is coming to destroy it.
FOUR TYPES OF MEN TO AVOID
01. THE ABSENT MAN
He’s physically present but spiritually absent.
Lacks love
Avoids responsibility
Avoids difficult conversations
The sitcom dad
A guy who looks great but is subtly passive
Today he might be a man addicted to the phone
02. THE COMPROMISED MAN
He leads through intimidation instead of love.
Living in sexual sin
Enslaved to an addiction
03. THE SELFISH MAN
Prioritizes:
Career
Hobbies
Comfort
04. THE UNTRUSTWORTHY MAN
Lost trust in the past. Suddenly wanting to lead.
Husbands: Strive to regain trust through consistency of faithfulness in the same direction over time.
Wives Pray: “Help me to begin to trust again.”
Wives Resist: The temptation to attempt to step into his role of headship.
Questions
01. How are you doing building your family?
02. Are you invested in your church? How?
03. What have you been given to build?
04. Do you regularly seek God’s help?
02. HEADSHIP REFLECTS THE LEADERSHIP OF JESUS
Ephesians 5:25–30
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…”
LAYS DOWN LIFE
Not just dying physically, but daily in humility.
SANCTIFIES HER
Not just practical but spiritual leadership.
The Word
Discipleship
Encouragement
Willingness to challenge
Don’t be afraid of your wife’s emotions!
GARDENING
Takes cultivating & pruning.
Be careful not to hold back something most wives are HUNGRY FOR.
PRESENTS HER
Not ownership, but stewardship of God’s daughter.
Her dad gave her to you, but you will give her back one day to God too.
CHERISHES HER
This means tenderness.
Peter calls the wife “the weaker vessel.” She is more fragile.
Treat her like it.
Warmed by a fire — Emotionally Attentive
03. HEADSHIP REVEALS A MAN’S NEED FOR GRACE
One of the GREATEST problems: LACK OF INTEGRITY UNDERMINES YOUR MORAL AUTHORITY.
You lack any credibility if you’re living in:
Sexual sin
Anger
Spiritual passivity
Addiction
Egregious sins
A godly woman simply cannot trust or follow the authority of a compromised man.
What if I’ve failed in these areas?
Are you a man, husband, father who has neglected your responsibility to lead, fallen into addiction and sexual sin, abused, hurt, or used women, children, other men, or rejected God Himself?
Today is the day of confession, repentance, and renewal.
BAD MEN CAN BECOME GOOD MEN IN JESUS’ NAIL-SCARRED HANDS.
HEART CHANGE
2 Corinthians 5:21
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Psalm 127:1
“Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”
Acts 3:19–20
“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord…”
One day you will cast your crown at Jesus’ feet…
